Mens Fall Shopping Guide 2011 (The Basics)

There are a lot of men who aren't actually interested in fashion they just like to look nice. Understandable. To most men the fashion industry is looked at like a joke. My three part buying guide will get you comfortably through this fall and winter, and preventing you from being too out of style, and well, too in. My guide is for the student on the go, or the working man who needs some ideas for weekend outfit choices. Let's start the first part with the basics.

The Henley
The henley shirt is not quite a polo, but not quite a button down. It's the perfect medium. The henley is extremely versatile and extrememly comfortable. I own about six of them. 21 Men, H&M, Pac Sun, and Gap have the best inexpensive selection of them.

How to wear it?
Simply layer it under a blazer, cardigan, or by itself. If you're going to the grocery store, try a henley put under a cardigan, skinny indigo wash jeans, with desert boots.

The Desert Boot
No, I am not talking about the boot you wear in the desert. Desert boots got their name from their dusty appearance from the suede. It's a chukka type boot that can be worn NUMEROUS times. The most famous desert boots is Clarks. Although Clarks is the most expensive option, they're definitely the most durable. My first pair of desert boots came from Aldo, and they've gotten me through two seasons. They had the same look as the Clarks, but you can tell they were cheaply made. I suggest saving and splurging. I just purchased a pair of black leather Clarks desert boots, and I'm very impressed despite them not being suede (I wanted a change since I already had suede, but I suggest starting with suede).

The best thing about desert boots is their versatility. No matter what color you get. Try pairing them with rolled up chinos, madras shirt , wool socks, and a denim jacket.
*when shopping Clarks shoes, especially the desert boots, go one size lower than you are because once you star tot wear them a lot they will stretch out.*

The Moto Jacket
What do you throw on when you have a day outfit that you want to make night time/party appropiate? A motorcycle jacket. You don't have to go to the extreme when buying one, just make sure it has the proper detailing. Getting a regular motorcycle jacket can make you look extremely "dad." If you can see below, the jacket has a side zipper, and pocket detailing which makes the jacket actually interesting. These can be a bit pricey, so unless you have the money I suggest buying pleather. Try 21 Men, Zara, H&M for the best choices.

Once again, the motorcycle jacket is intended to spice up your everyday look. That said, you can do a henley, black denim, and Doc Marten boots to have that head turning, rockstar look. Make sure the jacket fits as snug as possible. Fit is key. If you're into the jacket look even more, try putting a light denim shirt over the henley to give the denim/moto look. Super edgy.

The Scarf
The scarf is of course an already basic, but what you don't know is that thin scarves are taking the front center. No more chunky knit scarf. Instead, you pair a chunky knit with a light summer scarf and still be warm. Urban Outfitters have the best selection of thin scarves.

An oversized sweater of course! Or you can put a peacoat on buttoned, and put the scarf inside. Either way it will make you look less bulky than before with the chunky scarf and jacket.

The Denim Jacket
The ultimate layering piece in the winter. It is so easy to layer this jacket. There are many different ways to go with the wash, but I would definitely suggest the lighter faded denim choice. Perfect for everything. My suggestion is Levi, 10 Deep, or actually going thrifting and finding one with that vintage feel. Always go small when buying these jackets. No matter how slim you are, a slim denim jacket will make you look so much more better. If the jacket is too big you will look clumped thus throwing the entire layered look out the window.

This season, the denim jacket is all about layering. Try a black peacoat over the denim jacket with a plaid shirt at the base. Then for pants do a skinny khaki cord or chino. I say timberland "butter" boot or a nice rough pair of leather moto boots.
