Teen Room Inspirations

When you're a teenager, doing a room makeover can be hard, because you aren't really sure what to do, and/or where to start. This article, and the following pictures will help guide you through the process of doing a complete makeover, and make sure that when people step into your room, they can get an overview of your life, by four walls.

Okay so the first step, is deciding what is your personality type. Are you Bubbly? Shy? Fierce? Spontaneous? Bland? Minimalistic? Do you like vibrant colors? Do you like neutrals? Do you get annoyed easily? Do you like space? or cramped areas?

Some examples of modern rooms are seen here (note: im not advocating that you go and buy a whole new set, but if you have that fit into your budget then these are some suggestions):

I want to buy a whole new bed set, where should I be going?
In this day and age, more and more people are turning to IKEA to do bedroom sets because their  pieces are stylish yet extremely useful and versatile. If you are a more traditional person than you should go to places such as Value City or JC. Penny

I really can't afford to buy a whole new furniture set, what should I do then?
If you cannot afford, or want to keep the furniture you have, then you could always go with some of your old items and decorate them in more of a mature way such as painting them, or using a sponge, to go over your headboard and footboard which is probably white from childhood or maybe just a color you aren't feeling anymore. You can always switch everything around, which always make everything more fresh, and then go to secondhand shops or flea markets. Okay first thing you say is "I don't want something somebody else had in my room" Okay all you have to do is wash it or something, its not really that dirty, or they wouldn't put it for sale, plus thats so much more money that goes into your pocket!

Mkay so the next step is Accesories. This really makes your room. Things such as desks, posters, bulletin boards, and if you're an artist, things you made should be in your room. If you have an computer, put it in your room to make it more home away from the living room or family room. If you are a person who stays shut in your room all the time, then invest in a mini fridge to keep your goodies stored away. All of this should ultimately make you feel at home, because your room should be the homiest place in the house. Now for places to purchase accesories, you can go to any Target or Wal-Mart who sells EXCELLENT Accents for your room, for a very low price.

The last step is the paint of the walls. This is tricky, and make sure you pick which one you really want, and take a couple days to think it through, because it maybe permanent (you know how parents are). But all colors have their meanings, let me show you what I mean

  • Blue is a calming, relaxing color. The color is good for bedrooms but can destroy the mood in a dining room as it serves as an appetite represent. Combined with green, blue exudes a natural atmosphere in a room.
  • Green is a relaxing color. The color symbolizes a certain harmony both in the world and in life.
  • Red is a fiery color that at times represents both hatred and passion. Red also represents power; thus the use of it for celebrities on the red carpet and red ties for powerful executives.
  • Yellow is  a powerful color. Since yellow is the color of sunshine, it has a happy, uplifting aura. However, yellow can also be the color of melancholy and cowardice
  •  Pink is a soft color often used in the decorations and room decor for little girls. Psychological studies have actually shown that this color causes physical weakness in people.
  • Orange is a mixture of red and yellow, so it has all the warmth and comfort of those colors. Some oranges - such as the color of pumpkins and fall leaves - is a stimulant and good for use in the dining room.
  • Purple has always been a special color, representing royalty and spirituality. Purple is known for stimulating creativity in small doses, but large amounts of purple can cause depression and moodiness.
Considering the meanings of the different colors is an important part of decorating your room. You should consider both the way the colors make you feel - for example, if you fell in a vat of yellow paint when you were little, yellow is probably not a cheerful color for you.

Whatever type of person you are, your room should reflect that, and make you feel good when you come in! I hope this article will inspire everyone to go and take on the inner creativity (what VC Magazine is all about: inspiring creativity) and make your room an reflection of you, if this helped or you would like additional more personal help with your room, email me at  Vintagecardigans@gmail.com and I'll be happy to help.

  1. Hi Justin:
My son saw the photo of the combined dorm/bed/closet/desk you posted here, and HE WANTS it. Is this furniture commercially available in any store? If so where? Internet shop?
    Thanks for answering,
    Nikolaus
